Trump’s ban on transgender and its effects
On July 26, 2017, Trump abruptly announced that transgenders are not allowed to serve in the military. Mr. Trump announced this via a couple of tweets saying American forces cannot afford the tremendous medical costs on transgender services. He also said that he consulted the defense secretary but it was acknowledged that it was given to him only a day before the notice was officially released.
He chose to opt this option because the hormone therapy for transgender transformation and such services costs defense and security a huge amount of $790 billion. Civil rights and transgender advocacy groups were against this and said they will go to law suits against this policy as this policy is way too discriminating.
Everyone opposed and protested against this policy, People came on roads and protested for equal opportunity to all. This all compelled Trump to reconsider his decision and change it. This created a lot of direst among people and made people this what the authorities are thinking.
On 27 July, 2017, after all the protests and legal sues trump changed his decision and stated that transgender people are allowed and still can serve the military for now in U.S Military.
The policy on who is to allowed to serve would not change until the White House sends the Defense Department new rules and regulations and the secretary of defense issues guidelines said the military service chief.
General Dunford said in the letter that they will continue to treat all of the personnel with respect and with equal rights. No one will be discriminated.
We are here in India, thinking its only the problem of under developed countries where getting equal rights is not less than a war, but now, we see even developed countries struggling for the same. The policy issued by the U.S government clearly violated the the basic right for equality to everyone. This would really have hurted the sentiments of different people.
Mr. Trumps transgender ban was criticized by everyone including 56nformer generals and admirals. All the officials added their voices to the criticism and said that this move will have opposite impact than what Trump is planning to have.
They all said- “This proposed ban, if implemented, would cause significant distruptions, deprive the military of mission-critical talent, and comprise the integrity of transgender troopswho would be forced to live a lie, as well as non-transgender peers who would be forced to choose between reporting their comrades or disobeying policy”.
The retired and high ranked officials totally stood against trump’s decision and also said that trump’s claim of high medical cost is already been disapproved by the RAND Cooperation, as well as the later and latest studies have shown that the medical costs for transgender troops would be at most $8.4 million annually only which is 0.1 percent of the military’s annual total medical budget.
