Tarun Tejpal was charged in court today for raping female journalist at Tehalka magazine four years ago. Former chief and founder-editor Tarun Tejpal had stepped down as the head of Tehalka following the charges, and pleaded not guilty.
Replying to a petition filed by Tejpal, a Goa court rejected deferring of all charges by a month. In a separate statement, the court also denied conducting his further proceedings in isolation.
Tarun has been charged under section 376 of IPC (rape), but the court will hear his petition to drop the case in November this year.
However, Tarun has denied all charges against him, and pleaded guilty in court. He even stated this as a ‘political vendetta’ by the BJP government in Goa in return for his (Tejpal’s) criticism of them.
Despite this, the Goa Police filed an over 2000 page charge sheet against the journalist, stating that there was enough evidence proving him guilty.
The case was registered by a junior journalist at Tehalka some four years ago, when some emails exchanged between her, Tejpal, and the then Managing Director of Tehalka had gone viral, and Tejpal was arrested in November 2013.
He was then lodged at the Sada jail in Goa, before being released on bail by the Supreme Court in 2014.
