Seventeen thousand, two hundred and sixty-two farmers in Uttar Pradesh received loan waiver certificates of Rs. 1000 or below. This was effective under a scheme which promised to waive loans of upto Rs. 1 lakh, this was a scheme proposed by the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP).
Out of the 17,262 farmers, there were 4,814 people who received a waiver of amounts between Rs. 1 to Rs. 100. 6,895 people were given waivers of amounts between Rs. 100 and Rs. 500, while the rest, 5,553 people got waivers ranging from Rs. 500 to Rs. 1000. These were the divisions of the waivers received by the farmers as promised by BJP.
In the first phase of this scheme, BJP has reported, Rs. 7,371 crore of loan waiver certificates have been distributed of more than 11.93 lakh farmers in the state of UP.
According to the government, 41,690 farmers received loan waiver certificates ranging from Rs. 1000 to 10,000 while 11.28 lakh farmers have supposedly received loan waiver certificates of more than 10,000 each.
Major criticism was faced by the government when reports of inconsequential amounts being given to farmers under the loan waiver scheme. The government was made to issue a clarification regarding this criticism. Some farmers reportedly received waiver certificates of less than Rs. 1, which gave the Samajwadi Party to accuse the BJP government of “cheating and humiliating” the farmers of UP. One such case was of Shanti, a farmer in Hamirpur’s Maudaha Tehsil, who received a loan waiver of Rs. 10.37 for a debt of Rs. 50,000, this left her shocked.
The clarification given by the government was very vague in nature, they claim that apart from the loan itself the outstanding interest has also been cleared due to which the extremely low amount was reflected in some cases loan waiver certificate.
