Today, a huge step was taken up by Income Tax Department by deactivating over 11.44 lakh PAN cards in order to check fake PAN cards and to block multiple PAN card of an individual or single PAN cards issued to multiple users. Santosh Kumar Gangwar, Minister of State for Finance, informed the Rajya Sabha about this step.
In legal terms, it is not legal for an individual to have multiple Permanent Account Number (PAN) cards. A penalty of Rs.10,000 is liable to be imposed under section 272B of Income Tax Act, 1961.
There were cases where multiple PAN cards have been issued to the same person and one PAN allotted to multiple persons. In some cases, the government also detected falsified information given by the people.
So, it is very important for everyone to check the validity of their PAN cards and also link it with the biometrics based Unique Identity Number: Aadhar on or before 31st August 2017.
In order to know the status of your PAN card, you need to visit Income Tax e-filling website. Check out the following steps in order to know the status of your PAN card :
- Go to Income Tax e-filling website
- On the homepage, under the ‘Services’ tab, click ‘Know your PAN’.
- On the new page, enter your following details :
Date of birth,
Registered mobile number
and click “Submit”.
- Now You will receive an OTP (One Time Password) on your registered mobile number. Enter the OTP.
- If your PAN card is active, it will be shown as : ACTIVE
In case, there are any issues with the validity of your PAN card or your information is false, you will be redirected to a new page for additional information and it will notify the validity of your card.
Linking to your PAN card with Aadhar has been made compulsory. If you do not link or fail to link your PAN card with Aadhar, then you PAN card will be declared invalid by December 2017. Aadhar has also been made compulsory while applying for PAN card with effect from July 1, 2017.
