Has Individuals Truly Surrendered For # GIVEITUP?
After the appeal of the then PM of India Lal Bahadur Shastri to the people to donate for the cause of the Indo-Pak War of 1965, comes this direct appeal from the PM Narendra Modi. On March 27, Modi had officially launched the ‘Give-it-Up’ campaign, urging the well-off to surrender their LPG subsidy so that it can be targeted for the needy. The aim is also to bring down the country’s dependence on energy imports by 10 per cent by 2022. GIVEITUP
Appeal was made by Mr Modi to well-to-do sections of India to voluntarily give up LPG subsidy saying “Money we save from giving up LPG subsidy is the money we will use for the poor”, so that they too have access to clean energy.Every cylinder that we use in our kitchen carries a subsidy of about 200 rupees. This translates to a huge annual subsidy burden on the Government, that drains precious resources which otherwise could have been used in developmental activities. The aim is also to bring down the country’s dependence on energy imports by 10 per cent by 2022.
Since Modi made the appeal in March last year, 1,00,06,303 LPG consumers have stopped using subsidised cooking gas, helping the exchequer save a few thousand crores of rupees in doles, oil ministry officials said. Those enrolled for this movement have to buy the product at the market price. Hence , the amount saved from the subsidies could be utilised for other developments for the country.
Modern India is stridently progressing to become the epicentre of the world’s growth. India is at the threshold of the next great phase of socio-economic transition with and round optimism in its citizens. No doubt, the gears of progress are turning fast and therefore it is time that all of us help those sections of the country which are instrumental in ensuring the overall development. It will help in establishing continued access to more diverse sources of energy to nourish all round development. Becoming a part of # GIVEITUP. Movement would be a part of shaping the energy landscape that a resurgent India looks forward to. Hence, the fact cannot be denied that # GIVEITUP proves to be a boon for the country.
