The United States has a problem of gun violence. The frequency of occurrence of mass shootings in the United States is alarming, however, when we take a closer look at the statistics of gun violence, there are many other crimes associated with fire arms. Mass shooting is widely covered by media due to its mass tragedy however the horror of gun violence is much deeper.
An estimate of 92 people dies on a daily basis by the misuse of fire arms in the United States. Among them 30 are cases of homicide, 53 cases are of suicide and rest are cases of mass shooting, accidental shooting, police incidents and so on. These deaths amount to more than that of deaths caused by Aids, wars, terrorism combined. Therefore why is the sale of guns stills open to the public in the United States? The Orlando club incident and the shooting of a teenage icon in the concert should have brought light to the matter of making a policy change regarding gun possession. However, there is no regulation on a check on the mental state of the buyer which makes this even more dangerous.
The United States Second Amendment bill controversial right states that: “ A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. On December 15, 1791, the Bill of Rights as adopted, having been ratified by three-fourths of the states”.
The existing United States fire arms law permits the sale of fire arms but under certain guidelines. Ex convicts and ex-service men are not allowed to acquire fire arms. There is division of application of law under three divisions, the Federal- which is applicable to all the states, the state level law- which differs from state to state and the local level law- which could be localised to a certain region and at the local level the law could restrict or give liberty in acquiring fire arms according to the local administration and the local situation.
