Delhi University’s Hindu College girls slept outside the administration block, protesting against the fee hike of the Hostel. The University has raised the fee for the Hostel accommodation to Rs. 90,000 for girls but for the boys it is at Rs. 60,000. The protest has gone into its third day today and it will go on as long as the authorities do not address this issue in public. The girls staying on campus have resorted to sleeping outside the administration block and non-hosteller students are also protesting the new rule of 8 pm being the last time for the non-hosteller students.
The students say that “affordable, secure and dignified accommodation is our right and the college is denying us.” The college administration is being blind to this protest and not responding to any of their requests. The students do not want to have a closed door, word of mouth meeting with the authorities, they want this issue to be discussed publicly. The student advocacy group, Pinjra Tod, has approached to the chief of Delhi Commission for Women, Swati Maliwal to intervene, following which the college principal has been summoned to reach a final solution to this problem. The college claims that they did not get Grants from the University Grants Commission, due to which there was a few hike.
