Congress candidate Sunil Jakhar won the Gurdaspur by-poll elections on Sunday by a clear majority of over 1,90,000 votes. The Gurdaspur seat was left vacant after the sudden demise of then elected BJP MP Vinod Khanna , and was in urgent need of filling up.
Jakhar was leading in the initial counting of votes of the by-polls which happened on 11th October, and made it to the end with a margin of 1,93,219 votes, leaving BJP and AAP candidates far behind.
Although BJP’s campaign in Gurdaspur was strong, it saw a turnover as its candidate for the position of MP in the district Sucha Singh Langah was charge –sheeted in a rape case, while the AAP’s candidate failed to attract much attention.
AAP’s candidate Maj Gen (Retd) Suresh Khajuria even alleged in a talk with reporters that official machinery for the counting of votes had been misused, and votes had been played with.
However, the huge margin by which Sunil Jakhar had won cleared all such doubts, ringing bells of celebration within the Congress, and strengthening the Congress’ position for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Punjab Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh tweeted, “the Gurdaspur by-poll election marks another major step in the revival of INC India (Congress), it’s clear that party is on upswing ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha polls”, celebrating the victory of Congress in his district.”
