After violating different laws in regards to serving liquor, eight different restaurants and pubs have been shut down in several posh places in Delhi. The Excise department of Delhi government has suspended their liquor license and has lodged FIRs against these restro-bars. Officials have said that Masaba Restaurant in Punjabi Bagh, My Bar Grill in Hauz Khas, Lithiyum Restaurant in Ashoka Hotel in Chanakyapuri, Ministry of Beer in Connaught Place and three restaurants in Rajouri Garden – Café Cruise, Game of Legend and Too Indian – have been prosecuted. These restaurants and bars are guilty of serving alcohol to underaged customers, some without license, Non-Duty Paid Liquor (NDPL), outside permitted area and even giving out expired beer, said officials.
The police conducted raids on 43 restaurants in total, starting from the first of June and it ended on the thirty-first of July. Out of these forty-three raids, eight were found guilty of having broken the law. An officer said that “A meeting was convened by LG Anil Baijal in April where he said eateries contravening laws regarding liquor must be dealt with very sternly.”
The reason for this sudden raid having been conducted is the rise in the number of cases of road rage, drink and drive, accidents, and offenses against women, the LG pointed out. The LG also directed the Excise Commissioner to crack down more cases of this nature to avoid problems in the future. The legal drinking age in Delhi is 25 years. As per the rules, the excise department can take strict actions against the violator, consumer and server, imposing a hefty fine and taking away the liquor license. An officer is proud to say they have apprehended 2885 people in drinking in public cases in the city since November 7th 2016 to 31st July 2017. Another survey conducted this year has shown that an increase of 20 percent is seen in death accidents cause by drunken driving.
Hopefully, after this major raid, people realise that there is a certain age limit for a reason, there is no point in drinking and jeopardising your life. Get responsible. Know the right age.
